As a new student at Dublin City University (DCU), you are allocated a unique email address used to access your DCU email, Loop, Wi-Fi, and course registration. Digital Technology Solutions (DTS) provides this guide to help you complete your initial account onboarding.
Note: You will need a laptop and your mobile phone to start this process. It takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. Ensure you have enough uninterrupted time to finish the setup.
Overview of Account Access
New students receive an email from DCU outlining how to access their account information. If you have not received this, please check your email spam folder.
The first page prompts you to confirm your identity using your student or application number. This is a 9-character identifier starting with the letter A.
Password Requirements
During setup, you must create a strong, unique password. DTS requires the following criteria:
- Length: Between 14 and 25 characters.
- Characters: Must include uppercase letters (A-Z), lowercase letters (a-z), and numbers (0-9).
- Special Characters: Must include at least one special character from the following list: @#$%^&*–_!+=[]{}|:‘,.?/~”()`.
Account Setup Steps
- On your laptop, open the onboarding email received from DCU.
- Enter your student application number.
- Note your DCU email address for future use.
- Create your password according to the requirements listed above and store it securely.
- Install the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device from your official app store.
- In the app, tap the + icon to Add Account, select Work or School Account, and then select Scan a QR Code.
- On your laptop, click Next.
- Use the app on your mobile device to scan the QR code displayed on your laptop screen.
- Enter the number notification displayed on your laptop into the app on your mobile device to complete the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) setup. You may be prompted to enter your personal mobile device PIN.
- Click Next, then add a non-DCU email address for recovery. A verification code will be sent to that personal email.
- Enter the code on your mobile device when prompted and click Finish.
Managing Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
MFA ensures your account has optimal security.
Warning: You must keep the Microsoft Authenticator app on your phone throughout your time as a student. Do NOT uninstall it after the initial setup, as it is required for future logins.

- If you get a new phone, follow the instructions to Back up and transfer MFA
